Red-tailed Hawks play an important role in controlling small mammal population. Rodents make up about 85% of their diet. Their excellent eyesight helps them spot small mammals, such as mice, squirrels, rabbits, and opossums from heights of 100 feet. They swoop down and use their sharp talons to capture the small animals. Red-tailed Hawksare found throughout North America. The Red-Tailed Hawk is one of the most common hawks. They can be seen perched on high wires and poles or slowly circling the sky in search of prey.
